The U5/U6 program is designed to enhance the development of our young players by using a game format based on research and recommendations from numerous national coaching programs regarding optimal player development. Players are not placed on traditional teams. We put them into 3v3 mini matches where they can play for the entire duration of the game. The program is run by the Director of Recreation on Saturday mornings
If children are allowed to play 100% of the time we will meet their needs:
More playing time = More fun, more action
And the requirements of optimal player development:
More playing time = increased number of contacts with the ball; increased decision making; and increased exposure to repeated game situations.
“At the early levels of youth soccer kids are just getting to know the game; they’re exploring, checking things out, feeling their way into the game. They may wave to you in the middle of the game or spin around with their arms out at midfield because of some sudden, mysterious inspiration. They want to run, to chase, to kick, to be with friends- and to follow the ball wherever it goes (and who can blame them). During these years the kids should touch the ball as often as possible, with both feet.
When they play games they should absolutely be left alone: the field should be their world, on the child’s terms. These years should be about FREE PLAY with the world’s favorite toy, the ball, and about falling in love with the game “
